Frequent Nighttime Urination, Sleep Apnea, & Your Dentist

Did you know that Frequent Nighttime Urination, aka Nocturia, is a symptom of Sleep Apnea (airway obstruction stoppages of breathing)? Don’t feel dumb, most doctors of all types don’t know either. And hardly anyone would think of going to a dentist, certain ones who can treat Sleep Apnea, either. But that is exactly what children and adults with Frequent Nighttime Urination problems should do. When the airway is closed-off during episodes of Sleep Apnea, oxygen decreases, carbon dioxide increases, the blood becomes more acidic, the heart rate drops, esophagus & intra-abdomoinal pressures increase & more blood flows to the right atrium of your heart. Your body thinks it has too much fluid, so it reacts by making its own natural diuretics that cause your body to get rid of sodium & water. What happens next? You wake-up to start breathing again & you go urinate. Can other things cause the Frequent Nighttime Urination problem, like Diabetes mellitis, lower urinary tract infections, degenerative neurologic conditions, & psychological factors? Absolutely! They are part of your differential diagnosis. The Dentist connection? Sleep Apnea Appliances, worn in the mouth, that a few of us dentists can custom-make for you, are the #1 best treatment for mild to moderate forms of Sleep Apnea. CPAP machines are the best for severe Apnea cases, but 50% of people, who have them, cannot tolerate the CPAP machine, so we make intra-oral appliances for 50% of the severe cases too! IF YOUR LIFE IS AFFECTED by FREQUENT NIGHTTIME URINATION and SLEEP APNEA, SEE a DENTIST WHO CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE with a SIMPLE, NON-INVASIVE, APPLIANCE WORN at NIGHT. “A little secret: the ones I design can also help with headaches, facial pain, neck aches, & TMJ problems as an ADDED BENEFIT.”

  • There are fairly just a few products on the market that can assist stop loud night in the area of airway enhancers or nasal dilation. While most are brief term options, some can still present long term relief. If in case you have persistent nasal problems or discover it powerful to keep your nasal passages open whenever you sleep these products can help. Nasal dilation and airway enhancers can excellent for you if your problems aren’t too severe.

  • Hey Dr Paul. Thanks for dropping by my blog – that was you I hope!

This is a very interesting article about sleep apnea. I have passed it on to a friend of mine to read as he has suffered for years with SA. Unfortunately he’ll not be able to make it over to NJ as we’re in Australia. Can you recommend any dentists in the Brisbane QLD area who are as knowledgeable as you in this area? Cheers, Michael Pedzotti.
