Dentistry for Diabetics Information Dentistry for Diabetics Image

What is it?
Dentistry for Diabetics is a small group of certified dentists, currently about 20 in the United States, whose purpose is to educate our population about the connections between infections in the mouth (mainly gum disease) and life-threatening systemic diseases, especially Diabetes. Their advanced training and education also makes them the logical choice for treating these patients with special needs.

We are the only Dentistry for Diabetics office in the Cherry Hill, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area.

Why should this concern me?
If you have Diabetes, or are Pre-Diabetic, you may have a Secret Enemy working inside your body every day accelerating you Diabetes, making it worse, and making your blood sugar impossible to control. You know the frustration of trying to eat right, exercise, even take your medication and still have out-of-control blood sugar levels!! Well, the answer is not just upping the drug dosage. WHAT YOU PROBABLY HAVE NOT BEEN TOLD IS: there is a “closed loop” between gum disease (undiagnosed low grade infections hidden deep inside your gums) and dental health and the worsening or AUTOMATIC IMPROVEMENT OF blood sugar control. New Breakthroughs in dental care specifically designed for DIABETICS are now available.

At Present there are about 24,000,000 people with Diabetes in America. There are at least another 57,000,000 people who are Pre-Diabetic. There numbers keep increasing due to the diet and obesity problems in America. The CDC estimates that 1 in 3 children born after the year 2000 will become Diabetic in their lifetime. YOU MAY HAVE THE DISEASE AND NOT KNOW IT YET!

Did you know that not only is there an increase in sugar levels in you blood, but there is also increased sugar levels in your saliva? That is why people with Diabetes have MUCH MORE TOOTH DECAY.

Does this mean anything to me if I do not have Diabetes?
ABSOLUTELY! There are many connections between oral infections and extremely dangerous diseases and conditions throughout your body.

Gum Disease (periodontal disease) causes inflammation, as well as the spread of the infection throughout your body via the blood vessels in your gum tissues.

This is bad because the inflammation causes your liver to release proteins which make your cholesterol, even if you have lower cholesterol numbers, more sticky. It forms plaques, clogging your blood vessels and making your heart work harder and wear out faster. This can lead to a HEART ATTACK and shorten your life or quality of life. If any of these plaques break loose, they can travel to your brain and cause a stroke.

A certain gum disease bacteria has been found to travel to your joint areas and cause arthritis when your body releases chemicals to fight that bacteria (the so called auto-immune response).

This same bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis, in PREGNANT WOMEN with gum disease, increases the risk of PREMATURE and LOW BIRTH WEIGHT baby deliveries. The toxins produced by oral bacteria enter the bloodstream, cross the placenta and harm the fetus. This, in addition to the mother’s immune response to the infections, can trigger pre-term delivery.

There is NO DOWNSIDE to TREATING GUM DISEASE DURING PREGNANCY!! You must have all infections treated as soon as possible during pregnancy.

Other problems linked to gum disease:
OBESITY, KIDNEY Disease, LUNG Disease, some CANCERS, OSTEOPOROSIS, and ULCERS.

Research continues to focus on the oral-systemic health connections.

We will address your concerns properly and help you towards better life and health.
